The Beauty of Florence Surpasses that of Ancient Athens: Giambologna, L’Architettura, ca. 1570“Most notable is the statue of L’Architettura that we find in the loggia of the courtyard of Bargello, not far from the Virtù che sottemette il Vizio. Architecture is symbolised by a beautiful naked woman, sitting on a pillar, holding emblems of art. The figure, a bit larger than life, stands on an elegant pedestal by Niccolò Tribolo. A joyous elegance of sculptural vivacity combines qualities of uncommon craftsmanship — a work of youth, easy and carefree, fair and flawless, in full maturity. The limbs are very accurate, the upper part of the torso smooth and solidly modelled, and the delicate features of the face; this figure in its classical simplicity and severity is remarkable, and is worthy of attention because it serves to demonstrate the inexhaustible trace of Giambologna, flowed from whose hands and alternated in various works.”
